How soon should I book my newborn session?
We all know that babies don’t generally come on time, so booking a solid date doesn’t work, however knowing your due date and calling to book in ahead of time allows me to leave open days to capture your little peanut while he or she is still new. I suggest booking as soon as your first trimester is complete. Newborn sessions take place between 4-10 days old, therefore it is imparative that I know your baby has been born within two days of birth.
Do you supply props for all sessions?
Unfortunately, The only props I supply are for newborn sessions, and there are A LOT. As well I supply backdrops for young children’s indoor portraits. I am always buying new things and trying to come up with fresh, and creative ideas. If however you would like to include props in your other sessions, you can feel free to bring them. All I ask is that you let me know in advance.
How long have you been doing photography?
6 years ago, my husband bought me my first SLR camera as a Christmas gift. He wanted to do something special as I was an avid scrapbooker, and great pictures made my creations that much better. Unfortunately for him I was so upset. I couldn’t believe he would spend that much money on a gift, but apparently he knew something I did not. Eventually, my love for scrapbooking dwindled, and the creative elements of photography became incredibly appealing to me. It started with me taking pictures of my own family, and then a few friends would ask, and eventually, it became this amazing business that it is today. I can safely say that I never chose photography as my career, instead it chose me, and I am so grateful!
How did you learn all the things you know?
Truthfully, like so many other great photographers, I am self taught. I made some horrible mistakes starting out, and there were many times when my camera almost went for a swim in the lake. Instead of getting angry and giving up, I would keep a diary of what I learned and where I made mistakes, and eventually it just all came together. I can honestly say that I am still learning every single day. I absolutely love doing composite work with newborns (eg. Putting babies in flowers, moons and such) but it’s a work in progress, along with the rest of it. The best part about it, is that my mind is always busy, and it never gets old. If I feel like I am getting bored, I just learn something new.
Have you ever had an unsuccessful newborn session?
No. Some take longer than others, but I will always take the time needed to get the shots that you came for. It’s a weird phenomenon to my family and myself that I have an incredible amount of patience working with newborns and children, when in my day to day life I am the most impatient person you will ever meet. I think maybe they are my Zen lol!
Do you travel?
Unfortunately at this point in time I do not. I may head out for the odd marathon, but having a husband who works away, and two kids, one at home and not yet in school, I find it’s very hard to get away.
Where are you located?
I am nestled in the beautiful town of Hinton, Alberta. We are 45 minutes east of Jasper, in a town surrounded by the incredible Rocky Mountains. I absolutely love that I can call this amazing place home.
